There are several advantages of enrolling in an MBA program that we discussed in a previous article (available here). However, remote or distance business education is a different thing. That is why it is useful to go through the pros and cons of a remote MBA program.

Pros

There are several key advantages of enrolling in a distance MBA program. First of all, if you choose wisely, you can have the same amount of knowledge and education received as in a regular offline MBA program. So, the knowledge quality doesn’t suffer.

Second, all distance education programs have great accessibility. You can be sitting at home or at any place that you find comfortable and take your courses. You have the possibility to stay in your hometown. You have the possibility to continue your everyday activities. You have the possibility to carry on with your current job. Accordingly, this greater flexibility with distance business education programs is one of the most important advantages they offer.

Third, any distance MBA program allows using a great variety of modern technological tools, as far as they concentrate on providing the same experience as a regular educational program. They try to use the most advanced technological tools (like remote video conferences, project-based approach, online proctoring, etc.) available on the market at the moment in order to let students have the same feeling as studying in person and living at a campus.

Cons

There are several disadvantages of any distance MBA program. First of all, it is the lesser availability of in-person advice from the course counselors or professors during lectures or seminars. As a result, there is less possibility to discuss and understand some difficult points of any educational material.

Second, there is less possibility to communicate with your peers on campus or participate in other offline activities. Students have fewer chances to bond and create a business network of contacts that will help in a future career.

And finally, an important disadvantage of any online program is a lack of self-discipline and being prone to procrastination. Professors on campus require you to be on time and to complete your projects subject to deadlines. They constantly remind students of the tasks ahead and the stages to finish them. Conversely, with an online educational course or program, it is much easier to have all your assignments put away for some time and to be completed with less fervor.

Conclusion

All in all, enrolling in a remote business education program may be a great idea. However, potential students should be aware of both the possibilities the distance approach offers and the risks remote education has.

It is crucial for everyone to choose diligently the MBA program that is the best for a person to enroll. Here are several points that may be useful for a potential student in helping choose an MBA program right now or in the future.

Knowledge

The first characteristic to check is the amount of knowledge that the MBA program provides. You could go to the program’s website and look through the courses they offer. Look at the professor’s biographies and the areas that were involved. Check out the seminars or practical projects that this particular MBA program offers.

Based on the information obtained, you can draw a pretty clear picture of what amount of knowledge is offered. Hence, you can easily compare the programs that you were were looking through and choose the most suitable one in terms of the educational component.

Skills

Practical skills are often rated the second most important factor for an MBA program choice. It is more intricate to get information about than to find out some data about the “raw” educational modules. Nevertheless, many business schools are happy to describe and even advertise the practical projects and tasks their students are taking. More information can be found in online discussions and forums by alumni. Be sure to have a picture of what practical skills and experience you are going to acquire during your business studies.

Prestige

The next point of significance in the choice of an MBA program is the so-called prestige that this program offers to its graduates. It is no question and no doubt that there are some more respectable programs. Their reputation is based not only on the quality of education but also on the ability to get into the network. of like-minded professionals and individuals who have the same level of education, expertise, and interests. Many programs provide this possibility of networking and building your own ecosystem of connections that will help you in the future.

Meeting your job requirements

According to Ines Ivensh (leading specialist of StrateGate HR department), one of the important things to consider is the connection of a particular program to your current job. Some programs offer closer specialization: strategic programs or programs that dig deeper in some particular industry or programs discovering some particular field. Consider how you could be applying the managerial and entrepreneurial knowledge and skills you receive at an MBA program to your current job or the job you will be taking in the future.

Seamless integration (into your life)

One more additional decision point is the availability of the executive MBA variants of the programs. They offer much more convenience and optionality in combining your current job with your business education. There is the possibility to balance both in terms of continuing getting experience on the job and at the same time receiving more formal business education.

Price and other factors

Finally, a potential MBA candidate should be aware of the obvious set of convenience factors. The major one is usually considered to be the price of the MBA programs in your list. You decide on the price-quality balance of any program and then you make a choice. There are some additional points like distance from your hometown, the necessity to move, the availability of lodgings on campus. It can also be useful to check the language and some other additional particular traits of the MBA programs that you consider.

So in conclusion, several key points that everybody needs to check when choosing an MBA program are listed above. There are some more that weren’t covered here, but the ones that were are the most essential ones. Hence, check all the information available and have your own research. Eventually, you will be much more able to reasonably compare the MBA programs alternatives at hand that you’re considering enrollment at.

There are several key ideas that make business education the right choice for your career. Mostly, it is about building your career in a more sensible, thought-out way. Some people just naturally understand how to move their horizons, they understand that they need to know the right people, they need the right education, and that they should be moving orderly with some plan. But many people do it somehow chaotically: they don’t have any schedule beforehand and they just go with any job opportunities market offers to them – they move along the career path with not the perfect choices.

Targeted career building

There is a clear advantage in building your career in a more orderly and planned way. So, how do you do this? Combining some theoretical knowledge with some practical advice made by many practitioners on the labor market and with our own extensive experience in career building, here are four key points that should be developed throughout any career:

  • receiving a formal education is vital;
  • getting some practical experience or skills on-site and on the job, so you could show your future employer how you can solve problems in real life;
  • creating your own network of like-minded individuals or business and professional contacts that could promote your career;
  • paying attention to your business reputation or professional reputation that needs to be built adequately.

So why business education?

With this in mind, it is easy to see that business education is quite a crucial step on all these accounts. First of all, it provides you with some theoretical and more advanced practical knowledge in your profession or in your industry. And it also helps in terms of managing people, managing businesses, and managing processes.

Moreover, it gives the way to have ideas to generate, practical problems to solve, business plans to make, presentations to create, strategies to develop. And so they provide you with the possibility to develop your practical skills and experience. Even more, a good MBA program allows you to participate in real-life projects with worldwide leaders of your industry.

Besides, business education provides you with an opportunity to go and meet some new people, your peers or, maybe, your superiors. And these people could be part of your future business network of contacts.

We hope that these ideas on why business education is crucial will be an impulse for you to start creating your reputation as an outstanding professional in your field and in a professional that can manage people processes and create real-life solutions.
